DOUBLE YOUR GIFT’S IMPACT THROUGH EMPLOYER MATCHING!
Does your employer have a matching gift program? Lots of companies have set up such programs to support employees’ charitable giving by matching their personal gifts to qualified/eligible nonprofit organizations.
There are as many varying rules/guidelines as there are companies that have matching programs. That said, a few standard/typical ones include:
Charitable Organization Eligibility
Matching gift programs are set up to benefit charitable organizations, meaning registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations to which contributions are tax deductible under the Internal Revenue Code of the United States. Free to Smile Foundation qualifies on both counts:
Employer Identification Number (EIN): 26-358922
Effective Day of Exemption: October 6, 2008
Many employers also specify ineligibility criteria, such as political or religious affiliation. Free to Smile is neither affiliated to nor supportive of political or religious organizations. Free to Smile does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, veteran status or other characteristic/s protected by law.
Typically, employers will define gift eligibility by various criteria, such as:
– Gift matching ratio (e.g. 1:1)
– Gift matching amount (e.g. minimum $25 – maximum $50,000 annually)
– Gift type (e.g. cash, check, credit card, stock)
Always, eligible gifts must be tax-deductible. This means that at times—as is the case with event registrations, admission fees and auction item purchases—only the tax-deductible portion of your contribution will be eligible for a match.
When asking your employer to match your gift to Free to Smile, please be aware that most companies require that gifts be registered or claimed within the tax year in which they are made.
Long story short… because guidelines vary by employer, we recommend checking with your human resources department to make sure you get the most bang for your buck (or rather make the most bang with your buck!). True—the bigger the company the more likely it is they will have a matching gift program (often through a corporate foundation). Still, asking is the only one way to know for sure!
